Accentuate the Negative

Big Idea:
Negative numbers help us to model many real world situations.
Essential Question : How do I multiply and divide integers?
Notes: In class we talked about mean medium and mode. The mode is the average. You find that out by adding all the numbers up and dividing that by the number of numbers. The medium is the number in the middle. To find that you must put the numbers from lowest to highest. Then find the number in the middle. In there are 2 numbers in the middle then find the average of those numbers. The mode is the number that appears the most times. To find this just look at the data and see which numbers id used most times.

Problem 4.1:
A 1
Suppose the temperature changed by an average of +3 degrees per hour for a 10 hour period. Copy and complete the table below, and use it to find the total temperature change for the five hours.

A 2
Write a multiplication sentence that represents the total change in temperature for the first five hours. Write a multiplication that represents the total change in the temperature for the entire 10 hour period.
The Number of hours multiplied by 3 is the total temperature change.
B 1 Suppose the temperature changed by an average of -3 degrees per hour for a 10 hour period. Copy and complete the table below, and use it to find the total tempreture change for the first 5 hours.

B 2 Write a multiplication sentence that represents the total change in temperature for the entire 10 hour period.
The number of hours multiplied by -3 is the total temperature change.
C 1 Write the addition sentence illustrated by each diagram below.
A: 0+2+2+2 B: 0+-3+-3 C: 0+-2+-2+-2+-2
C 2 Write the multiplication sentence illustrated by each diagram below
A: 3x2 B: 2x-3 C: 4x-2
D Make up a situation about temperatures that can be expressed as 4x -10
Each day for 4 days the temperature has been dropping 10 degrees.
E Find each product.
1. 5x-4=-20 2. 20x-4=-80 3. -4x20=-80 4. -5x4=-20

Follow up
1. Suppose the temperature changed by an answer of +2 degrees per hour from its low of -4 F at 3:00 A.M. What was the tempreture at 1:00 P.M.?
At 1:00 P.M the temperature was 16 degrees F
2. Suppose the temperature changed by an average of -1.5 degrees from its high of +25 F at noon. What was the tempreture at 10:00 P.M.?
At 10:00 A.M. the temperature was 10 degrees F
3. When you add a positive integer and a negative integer, you sometimes get a positive result and sometimes get a negetive results. Is the same true when you multiply a positive integer and a negative integer? Explain.
When you multiply negative numbers the answer is negative. If the numbers are positive then it will be positive.
